The multitude of snow days that we have experienced here in Boston has taught me a lot about the profession of public relations. While everyone else gets a snow day and is allowed to sleep, watch Netflix, or play outside, public relations professionals still need to be at the top of their game.
- Be productive. If there is one thing I have learned about this 2015 winter, it’s that Mother Nature is unpredictable. You never know how long you will have with your coworkers, a client, or other resources to get the job done. Make the most out of every minute you are able to spend with someone.
- Be proactive. There is nothing I want more on a snow day than to forget my worries and watch Chopped, but force yourself to go through the motions of what you would do on a normal work day. Check in with your client, by doing this you have reassured them that they haven’t lost your focus just because of a little (or a lot of) snow.
- Be prepared. Even if you are still in bed at 1:30pm watching Chopped, keep your email up and your cell phone on. You never know when something could come up. Be prepared to drop everything to focus on whatever may come up.
In a world with constant communication, PR professionals need to maintain their level of focus and energy – even through the snow.
