Welcome back to Voices of PRSSA, this week we talked to Sydney Narvaez, a senior in PR from Staten Island, NY. With heading off to LA next semester, and being a former BUPRSSA Programming Coordinator we’re excited to hear what she has to say!
Why’d you join BU PRSSA?
I joined BUPRSSA my sophomore year. I came into BU undecided as a freshman and had no idea what to study. My freshman year in the spring I took COM101 and I knew I wanted to be in COM, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do and after COM101 I decided to declare my major in PR the summer after my freshman year. I still didn’t really know much about PR so I joined BUPRSSA my sophomore fall and just with coming to the meetings every week and hearing from guest speakers I learned so much about the PR industry. I also joined Unleashed PR so I was able to learn more about working in an agency like that. I mostly just joined to learn about Public Relations and hear from different speakers.
Do you have a favorite COM Class or Professor you’d recommend taking?
Professor Quigley is my favorite professor by far. Since I was on the e-board last fall I was able to work closely with him especially because in programming he helped me with so many contacts and planning meetings. This semester I’m taking Corporate COM with him, and he’s also a great professor, mentor, and person. And also his class is super interesting so I definitely recommend Corp. COM with Quigley.
Do you have any plans for graduation?/future career plans?
Next semester I’m studying “studying abroad” in LA even though it’s my senior spring but I think it’ll be really helpful and hopefully help me secure a job out there. I really want to work in the entertainment industry so next semester I have two internships in LA. One is at ID Public Relations where they’re publicists for a lot of big name actors and directors like John Krasinski and Jake Gyllenhaal. My second internship is at the E! Network in the publicity department. I’ve been dreaming of working at E! for my whole life and I still can’t believe I’m going to be there so I’m hoping one of those can maybe lead into a full time job doing some sort of entertainment publicity.
What did you think of today’s speaker? (Anai Sanchez Riveron)
I thought Anai was great! It was so strange seeing her as a speaker because when I joined BUPRSSA she was on the e-board and I saw her as a member with me and she helped me transition into taking the Programming Coordinator position. She did such a great job and it was one of the reasons why I wanted that position. So, it’s so interesting to see how far she’s come after graduating from BU, especially since I’ve known her for a few years now. And I thought her presentation was great, just hearing about all her experiences and her difficulties with her first job. I think she’s killing it!
What are you looking forward to this semester, PR related or otherwise?
I’m looking forward to being home with my family and spending time with them especially since I’m from New York and I want to end up in LA and I’ll be so far from them. Just taking a few weeks to relax before working again and going to the other side of the country away from my family and friends. Just really enjoying the holidays with my loved ones.
Thank you so much Sydney for being our Voice of PRSSA for the week, it was great talking to you, and we wish you well for the future! This will be the last Voices of PRSSA of the semester, and we hope that you all enjoyed hearing about BUPRSSA members. We hope all of you have a wonderful time during your break and good luck on finals!
