Voices of PRSSA: Calista Gray

Welcome back to Voices of PRSSA, this week we talked to Calista Gray, a PR sophomore with junior standing, from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Calista’s also a member of BUPRSSA’s Social Media Team; let’s get to know more about her!

Why’d you join BU PRSSA?

Well, my major is public relations, and I had heard about it in the past when I was looking at more academic extracurriculars, and I thought that it would look good on my resume and help me find more people with the same interests as me.

Why did you choose PR as your major?

When I was in highschool I was looking at totally different stuff for majors, but I had taken some college level communications classes, and then I saw companies tweeting and stuff and I wondered “Oh, who does that job? That would be cool”, and I looked more into it and found that Public Relations was that field. I actually wanted to be an interior designer before that.

Do you have a favorite COM Class or Professor you’d recommend taking?

Right now, I really enjoy my COM 331, the second writing for COM class that we take, I really like the content of that class just because I like the blogging aspect and how the class is focused on the things I’m personally interested in. For a professor, I really like Professor Shanler, who’s teaching my COM 215 class.

Do you have any plans for graduation?/future career plans?

Nothing specific. I’ve been tossing around the idea of maybe grad school, but if I was to do that I’d probably go somewhere closer to home, because it’s a lot cheaper and I like the Carolina area. But I’m not sure if I want to do grad school yet. I’m not sure also about future job plans. I do have a job at home that’s not in the communications field; I’m a bank teller, and it pays well. But I’ve been applying to internships recently so maybe if one of those turns out well I could use that as a future job.

What do you like about PR the most?

I like how modern it is. My specific interest is the social media aspect, and that you can communicate with so many different people and areas with just one message.

What did you think of this today’s bonding activities?

I thought it was really cool, whenever we go to meetings you never really get to see everyone, so it was nice to see people that you don’t usually see on a day to day basis and get to know them. Also, I got to reconnect with the COM Ambassador today, so that was cool. It was just really nice to interact with the people that you normally just sit next to.

What are you looking forward to this semester, PR related or otherwise?

I’m looking forward to taking more higher level media classes, and that’s really exciting for me because not only do I like social media stuff, but I also really like graphic design and computer related stuff and I’m excited to delve deeper into the world of public relations.

Thank you so much to Calista for being our Voice of PRSSA for the week, and thank you for all that you do on the Social Media Team. See you next week with another club member!
